Sing your heart out

SING YOUR HEART OUT

A breath of Fresh Air wafted through the small Molise town of Santa Croce di Magliano this evening, and it was quite simply a revelation.Image result for santa croce di magliano

Sprinkled liberally in freshly fallen snow this December it is certainly festive, and a concert held in the large white church which dominates the centre of the town bought a radiant glow to a cold winter's night.Image result for joy

A group of singers led by their musical director Francesco Finizio bought Gospel music to Molise.

The audience certainly seemed to enjoy the music although it was certainly a shock to many to see such vibrant energy literally rocking the church.
Gospel music is not new of course, but here in Italy certainly in rural Molise it set the pews alight, and the silverware vibrating.

Perhaps a regular dose of leaping, jumping, joyous singers could inject a new lease of life into the churches which are so often empty now apart from a resolute band of local people who file into mass daily.

I am not Catholic so am not in a position to pass judgement, so I decided to do a little research to find out the opinions of others more involved, and I came across this article,

Perhaps this excerpt sums up how many people feel

Worship is indeed a type of praise, and music is an integral part of it. But the sacred liturgy is the public prayer of the Church, a corporate worship by which baptized Catholics enter into a Mystery which is not of their making. Being a corporate action, it is governed by law and tradition so as to preserve its unity throughout the world and its fidelity to the Message revealed by God. Worship is a Christian act of the baptized gathered by bonds of communion with the visible institutional Church.

comments welcome.............

The guest soloist, La Shion Banks, from Georgia in the USA currently touring with the group said she enjoyed bringing a new brand of music to the hearts of the people here, and her exuberance certainly seemed to lift a few souls tonight.

Although she complained bitterly about the cold and snow it clearly did nothing to dampen her spirits or enthusiasm in bringing Gospel music to Molise.

Akachukwu Onubogu a bright and breezy young man from Nigeria, who has now settled here in Foggia also took the audience down a very different road from the one they are used too seeing when they sit in the wooden pews of their local church.

His rendition of Amazing Grace was sung with feeling and passion bringing tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.
(You can hear it on my facebook page)
Dancing, clapping and jigging with a vibrant energy he was an inspiration to everyone in the church.

I hope this version of the same song lifts your heart too.

The other singers created rich melodies which echoed with clarity around the small church,

Other soloists all sang with ease and grace. Even their pronunciation of the English lyrics was excellent. Something which is sadly not always the case I am afraid to say.

The drummer reminiscent of a rock musician certainly supported the choristers  accompanying at just the right pitch bringing rhythm and vitality  which together with pianist, bass player and violinist  created an eclectic mix

I hope this is beginning of something new which will bring people back into the churches here in Molise, as it a brand of music that certainly lifts the heart, and brings people together to celebrate just what Christmas is all about... Bringing joy to the world.

In 2018 let these words ring out across the world and perhaps if we could share the spirit of Christmas 365 days a year it would be a better place.

In the meantime, it is thanks to forward-thinking open-minded people like
the town's Mayor Donato D'Ambrosio and Nicoangelo Licursi that Molise does exist.

Molise with me

A little trip back over the past twelve months when I started my journey to explore Molise.
If you followed my blog then you will how it all began.
A view across  from my home near Lucito...............

I fell in love in Molise and want to lead you along the road to discovering all its well-hidden treasures.
                                                              Torella Del Sannio
Castellbottacio

This year I visited the tiny chapel of Pietracupa, which is built into the rocks. A unique, peaceful place hidden away from the world, which you must see if you visit Molise.
Tramped across this interesting bridge at Roccomandolfi
                                                                         The castle in  Lupara

There are wall murals in Santa Croce Di Magliano which brighten and enrich this small town on which sits on the border of Molise, and Puglia, painted every year in a celebration of  Antonio Giordano. He was a local artist and sculptor who lived there. Now his daughter carries the tradition on by providing the opportunity every year, to create more murals.

An amazingly interesting range of images adorns the town's walls bringing a unique brilliance that brings character and spirit.

There too earlier in the year, I joined local people to celebrate a procession through the town with cattle, sheep and horses parading right through the town.

It was a joy to see such pride in the people of the town, as they all took part in the celebrations.

Campobasso is one of three large towns in the region, the others being Termoli and Isernia.

The town is divided into two parts, the historical town, dominated by a large imposing castle, and an impressive church which sits above the city.

Decorated too with a huge number of murals, the most dramatic of which dominate the bus station and a number of apartment buildings festooned with huge pictures which bring colour to the skyline.

The old town of Campobasso is home to some old and interesting little shops many of which have been there for more than fifty years.Image result for montfort castle campobasso

Although not an inspiring town particularly it is fascinated historically, both back to times when it dominated the region in the time of the Samnites. and many, many years later when it became labelled as Maple Town because a large number of Canadians were based there.

Isernia one of the other major cities is also a very ancient town, dominated by a splendid piazza, surrounded by some cosy, friendly bars.Image result for isernia molise

The main streets in the town too are cobbled and packed with fascinating little shops.and galleries.

Snow topped mountains dominate the scenery around the town which nestles in the valley.

The other town is Termoli, which sits on the coast it's castle on the peninsula. In contrast to Isernia, and Campobasso, it is a uniquely different place it's ancient history still paramount in the story of Molise.

Still exploring Molise from one side to the other there is a great deal to discover, and I am looking forward to finding out a lot more.

Take this journey with me, as there is so, so much more to see..Image result for take my hand

Reasons to love

Reasons to love Molise

1. Blue Skies

More than three hundred days a year, skies of blue hangover Molise. A blue that is drawn in picture books. Image result for blue skies

Sometimes, a few wisps of clouds drift across the carpet of blueness, whilst on other days small clumps of cotton wool float gently over in a breeze. Image result for blue skies

Occasionally one awakes to grey skies, when rain is in the air, or when snow drifts down from the mountains,

But most of the time it's blue skies every day.Image result for blue skies

2. The Mountains

Molise is fringed with mountains, now snow-capped as winter approaches.

From my house, I can see the Matese mountains, now iced with snow on one side, and the glistening Adriatic sea on the other, sheer bliss every day............

3. The Sea

The azure waters of the Adriatic lap on sandy shores, creating gentle waves.

Echoing the words of Bob Marley, red, red wine which here in Molise comes from the Tintillia grape. It is truly scrumptious.
